Dancer, model, media whore! That was the face looking back at her in the mirrors lining the dance studio as she held the latest, grueling pose required for entry to next months issue of “Maxim.” She felt the heat in her ears, wondering what her grandma would say if she could see her now. Thigh muscles trembled as she bravely held the pose, wondering what in the hell she had done to her life.

An “A” student in high school she was bent on pursuing a career in medicine. Then… a chance encounter in a mall lured her into modeling  as a quick way to make money to pay for college. The first year she kept up with her classes by working nights,  but as her popularity grew she took more jobs, bolstered by the praise of local, and national media. Two years later she dropped out of school, dieted within an inch of her life and turned to cigarettes and pills to keep her appetite at bay. Even that wasn’t enough to satisfy the public, she found her published images airbrushed, free of lumps, lines or perceived imperfections.

Collapsing to the floor as tears filled her eyes she heard the frantic crew rush to her side, calling for paramedics. Sitting up, she waved them away, feeling one of the first genuine smiles of the year take over her face.

“Doll! Where are you going?” the frantic director shouted, nipping at her heels as she made her way to the door.

“To visit granny then to school, I’m late!” She shouted, running into the sunlit parking lot.

Bwahahaha! @ “bent on pursuing a career ” NPI I’m sure. 🙂 Interesting take, especially the air-brushed image suggestion. I didn’t really look closely at the image, but you’re probably right. Certainly a model who probably has several other poses in this shoot.

She sounds like a sweet girl, despite th poor ‘dieting within an inch of her life’ judgement. I like the ending.

    • I’m sorry you saw it as judgement. It is actually based on a real-life experience. My cousin wanted fame and fortune, she scored some modeling gigs, even got a few layouts in Sears and Penny’s ads, but she starved herself, started smoking to curb the appetite and ended up in the hospital. She is now healthy and living with her kids in a century home in the country. It addresses a very real, and recognized problem in the industry. Just the first memory that popped up when I saw the image.

Oh, what I meant was that the choice to ‘diet within an inch of her life’ was poor judgement on the girl’s part, but she sounded like a sweet girl to me, nevertheless. I did not mean that you were judging her.

I’m sorry to hear about your cousin, and glad to know

I’m sorry to hear about your cousin, and glad to know that she came out on the other side and is well now. True, body size and image are a very real concern for many people, models and non-models alike, especially over there in the west.

I’m so sorry. I was sleep deprived with respiratory infections yesterday and completely misread you comment. I should have stayed in bed. 🙂 Hope I didn’t upset you.
